We used to get notes that were just absolutely ridiculous, like you could never show a shot of a woman’s body that did not include a head, because the censors deemed that as objectifying. At the same time they were very strict about broadcast standards and practices. MTV had no experience in making original content, so they just let me do what I wanted to do. I wanted to make a show that was, not just for me as an artist but for the viewers looking for that sort of content, something that could be considered art on commercial television. They often didn’t understand what I was doing with the show, so I had to be pretty cagey about being to candid about what my real interests were at the time. I actually always preferred the Liquid Television version of the title sequence. That was what I originally wanted to use, but MTV thought that wasn’t explanatory enough. In the end, I think it turned out well, but I actually always prefered the Liquid Television version of the title sequence, which is just a close-up of the eye with the fly crawling up the face. This core visual would later go on to bookend the full length title sequence for Æon Flux’s ten episode run of half-hour episodes. ![]() Punctuated by a discordant sting, this image is the essence of Æon Flux made literal: an unflinching force of violence and seduction, manifest in an entity whose true motives are all but alien and inscrutable to the audience. Combining the far and varied influences of New Wave cinema, artistic expressionism, Franco-Belgian comics, and spiritual gnosticism, the 1991 avant-garde animated series follows the exploits of a mysterious dominatrix-cum-agent saboteur and her authoritarian nemesis/lover Trevor Goodchild – two opposing forces clashing as the pretenses of morality and justice are left morphed and unrecognizable in their wake. >Screenwriters Hay and Manfredi said in an interview that the film was re-cut by the studio prior to release, but that the original director's cut contains nearly 30 minutes of additional footage, which Chung acknowledged in his criticism. The French philosopher Michel Foucault once wrote, “The gaze that sees is the gaze that dominates.” Though originally intended to describe the biological reductionist philosophy of modern medicine, this phrase could easily serve as the maxim of Æon Flux. The fish tale has the youngest of King Triton’s (Javier Bandem) seven daughters, Ariel (Halle Bailey), longing to be part of the world above the water. None of these changes do much good in terms of improving on the original. The script by David Magee (“Mary Poppins Returns”) has been tweaked to make Ariel (Halle Bailey) less of a damsel in distress and to include a few more musical numbers. It’s not bad simply because it is heavily based on a story that worked before. I'm joking, but for both of you, what is it actually like watching something like this for the first time? Your imagination versus seeing the finished film? One of the things that I found striking was the CGI, and the underwater stuff is so beautiful to look at, and I'm convinced that he maybe went underwater to film. I'd never done something like that before, it was awesome.ĪWKWAFINA: Yeah, we were able to record the scene just in a room like this, and Rob is sitting right there, and I'd never done an animated or voice movie like that in that way. It was just really cool to film it that way. I was quite nervous, but doing it with everyone, it just felt so fun and real. ![]() And obviously getting into a character like this, you feel a lot of pressure. It was really, really cool to actually be able to do it together, and I think that definitely helped with the performance so much. TREMBLAY: Yeah, no, you're absolutely right. Can you both talk about the actual making of the movie because I think most people won't understand what really went on behind the scenes? The double-aimed struggle of the black artisan, on the one hand to escape white contempt for a nation of mere hewers of wood and drawers of water, and on the other hand to plough and nail and dig for a poverty-stricken horde, could only result in making him a poor craftsman, for he had but half a heart in either cause. The history of the American Negro is the history of this strife, - this longing to attain self-conscious manhood, to merge his double self into a better and truer self. ![]() One feels his two-ness, - an American, a Negro two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder. It is a peculiar sensation, this double-consciousness, this sense of always looking at one’s self through the eyes of others, of measuring one’s soul by the tape of a world that looks on in amused contempt and pity. With other black boys the strife was not so fiercely sunny: their youth shrunk into tasteless sycophancy, or into silent hatred of the pale world about them and mocking distrust of everything white or wasted itself in a bitter cry, Why did God make me an outcast and a stranger in mine own house? Just how I would do it I could never decide: by reading law, by healing the sick, by telling the wonderful tales that swam in my head, - some way. But they should not keep these prizes, I said some, all, I would wrest from them. Alas, with the years all this fine contempt began to fade for the world I longed for, and all its dazzling opportunities, were theirs, not mine. That sky was bluest when I could beat my mates at examination-time, or beat them at a foot-race, or even beat their stringy heads. I had thereafter no desire to tear down that veil, to creep through I held all beyond it in common contempt, and lived above it in a region of blue sky and great wandering shadows. Then it dawned upon me with a certain suddenness that I was different from the others or like, mayhap, in heart and life and longing, but shut out from their world by a vast veil. The Mongols who had conquered China in the 13th century wore their hair in a similar fashion, and the style became widespread and even popular. In his article on the queue, historian Michael Godley writes that in 1179, the Jurchen Jin dynasty - the Jurchens were ancestors of what became the Manchus - required “Tartar dress and hairstyles” as early as the 12th century. In The Great Enterprise, Frederic Wakeman writes that the policy “not only brought rulers and subjects together in a single physical resemblance it also provided them with a perfect loyalty test.” Nor were the Manchus the first to impose these demands on the Chinese population. In 1618, as Manchu armies moved into what is now Liaoning province, Nurhaci promised that Chinese who surrendered without a fight would be permitted to maintain both their property and their customs - including their hairstyle. Nurhaci, the Manchu leader who coined the name, at first seemed to take a different tack. It was common for northern tribes to enforce queues upon conquered peoples. The queue, or something like it, had long been a feature of central and northeast Asian men, documented since at least the Northern, or Toba, Wei dynasty of the 6th century. The order of July 21, 1645, was part of a long process involving hairstyles and the Manchu conquest of China. It was this long braid (often called a pigtail, though I have happily never seen a pig with any such tail) that came to be the identifying feature of the hairstyle, especially (but not only) in the West.
